The hill station of Dalhousie (1525 m to 2378 m), named after a former British governor-general, is full of old-world charm and exudes a lingering aura of colonial times. Covering an area of 14 sq km and surrounded by alpine vegetation, Dalhousie has charming architecture and panoramic views of both the plains and the white capped Pir Panjal range. Cold in winter, mild in summer.

Getting There
By Air: The nearest airports are at Gaggal (near Dharmshala), Amritsar and Jammu all of which are within a circuit of 130 km to 190 km. There are serviced by Indian airlines / Alliance air. Tourist taxis and buses are available from the three cities for transfer to Dalhousie.
By Rail: Nearest railhead is Pathankot, which is connected to most regions of India with express and superfast trains. Please refer to section on Dharamshala / Palampur for details of trains.
Taxis and frequent bus services provide easy access to Dalhousie from Pathankot. For details see under by road.
By Road: Delhousie lies astride the main Pathankot-Chamba route and the road to the city diverts at Banikhet, 6 km. The city, however, is well connected by a good network of roads to different parts of Himachal Pradesh and region. Some road distances to important places in the region are: Chamba 56 km (via Banikhet) and 48 km (via Khajjiar), Pathankot 80 km, Dharamshala 143 kms (via Banikhet, Chakki, Nurpur) and 127 km (via Bakloh, Lahru, Sihunta and Shahpur), Amritsar 191 kms, Jammu 190 kms, Mandi 270 kms, Manali 380 kms, Chandigarh 318 kms, (via Pathankot), and Shimla 336 km.

There are regular bus services to Dalhousie by state transport corporations of Himachal and Punjab and also of some private bus companies, linking the city to many parts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. But frequency of buses directly touching the city is less. However, an alternate option is to disembark at Banikhet, 6 kms from the city and very well connected by public road transport. Transfer to Dalhousie from Banikhet (20 min.) is possible with taxis, both of which are easily available throughout the day.

The main bus stand is located at the beginning of the city and has no worthwhile facilities.
